Short description
-
The Kurrawang Aboriginal Christian Community Inc. originated in 1984 from the Kurrawang Mission, which began as a 'native reserve' in 1952 under the Christian Brethren (then known as Gospel Brethren). Initially, it provided care for Aboriginal people recovering from hospital stays, distributed rations to local Aboriginals in Kalgoorlie, and offered camping facilities for those passing through. By 1968, it evolved into a hostel for school-aged children, with over 66 children, including wards of the state, residing there. In the 1970s, cottages were built, significantly improving living conditions. In 1984, the Kurrawang Mission concluded, and the Kurrawang Aboriginal Christian Community Inc. assumed management. A Christian Aboriginal school was established onsite, and in 1995, the land received freehold title.
