Short description

Mental Health Carers Australia, originally rooted in the ARAFMI movement (Association of Relatives And Friends of the Mentally Ill), emerged in response to the pressing needs of carers, relatives, and friends of individuals with mental illnesses. It began in Sydney in 1975 when a group of concerned carers recognized the necessity for a dedicated support service.
The movement rapidly expanded to other states and territories, establishing ARAFMI as a prominent provider of mental health carer services nationwide. In October 1998, Mental Health Carers Arafmi Australia was formally incorporated, evolving into what is now known as Mental Health Carers Australia.
